Snow Day: Can you run your class from home if school was cancelled?

As another wave of “weather” hits the midwest and east coast this week, here’s an awesome, insightful blog post at “Learning is Messy” — http://learningismessy.com/blog/?p=1040

Brian the blogger compares his experience with this year’s snow days and last year’s H1N1 epidemic, both of which resulted in lost school days.

He also has some suggestions for collaborative projects, virtual “field trips” or guest speakers, all of which can be adapted easily for My Big Campus users.

I can think of a few other applications here:

1. Keep some virtual activities and assignments handy for a substitute teacher.

2. Reach out to student “shut-ins” who can’t make it to class, but still need to keep up with their school work, with the added benefit of social time with their peers.

3. In-service / professional development / continuing education programs for your colleagues, all without the hassles of arranging conference space, transportation, parking and meals (OK, the meals might be a sticking point
