Skip the Social Media “Stigma”
Here is another great post about how to use Twitter for “back channeling”, engagement, record of discussion, etc. This one is in Teach Hub by Dr. Katherine McKnight. Read it here – 4Reasons to Use Twitter for Class Discussion.
She concludes with the caution that to actually use Twitter as advertised, however, you have to be able to get past the “stigma” of using social media (and potentially your school district’s AUP, policies, etc.)
Of course, that is THE problem with using Twitter, Facebook, etc. in the classroom. Most districts do not, and will not, allow un-moderated social media use. We can attempt to change hearts and minds – or we can just enable My Big Campus.
Real time “conversations” in My Big Campus can function exactly like Twitter in the classroom, with logging, a profanity filter, and the ability to link to shared resources – all available to any teacher with a My Big Campus account. Not to worry if your district is not a Lightspeed customer – freemium accounts are available to any teacher at www.mybigcampus.com.
Check it out!
